Contemporary Katana by Yoshihara Kuniie &
Hyogo Gusari Datchi Koshirae Ornate Mountings by Miyajima Ichiro.
The Masterpiece by Two Greatest Smiths
This is , without any question, one of the most admirable masterpiece from Showa era. The Katana blade was created by Yoshihara Kuniie (吉原國家), a.k.a Shoji Yoshihara who acted in the blockbuster Hollywood film "The Last Samurai".After he succeeded to the professional swordsmith name KUNIIE 3rd, he turned out to be a top swordsmith with an established reputation in the Japanese contemporary Katana world. His unrivaled technique to forge the blade and make very beautiful flower-shaped tempered line patterns has given him Mukansa or "exemption of examination" for every Katana exhibit/contest when he was only 37 years old. His worksite is located in Tokyo and he is now listed as the intangible cultural properties of Tokyo, along with his elder brother Yoshihara Yoshindo.
The whole ornate mountings of this item were created by Miyajima Ichiro (1914-93) who has been known as one of the most renowned sword ornament silversmiths in Showa era. He had created many ornate mountings for Katana swords being stored in national museums. His quality ornate mountings always have made great katanas "unsurpassable treasure". After creating many of outstanding works he passed away in 1993, so the collaboration work by these two "legends" could never happen again...
This item is without a doubt one of the best works in the contemporary Katana world.
The Saya scabbard and all fittings are mainly made out of silver. The gold color of the scabbard surface is finished with mixture of gold and silver by using a traditional method from Kamakura period (12-13 centuries). Mercury was used to have both gold and silver adsorbed to create the beautiful unique feel on the surface.
